We must become ignorant
of what we’ve been taught,
and be, instead bewildered.
Run from what’s profitable and comfortable.
If you drink those liqueurs, you’ll spill
the springwater of your real life.
Distrust anyone who praises you.
Give your investment money,
and the interest on the capital,
to those who actually destitute.
Forget safety.
Live where you fear to live.
Destroy your reputation
be notorious.
I have tried prudent planning
long enough. From now
on I’ll be mad.

I’ve been thinking a lot about it. Because it’s a big deal - you are this relationship to this other person, for life, no take-backs. She will always be my first goddaughter, my little nugget who snoozed on my shoulder and gnawed on my finger during a wonderful week in New York in May.
One of my favorite small moments of the weekend was when I was sitting in the car with her parents and her godfather, the four of us who cemented our closeness during a January wedding as bride + groom + maid of honor + best man, now a fivesome with this new little person literally in the middle of us. Anyway, as we headed off to a Brooklyn afternoon outing, I noticed that Baby M had a tiny hangnail from that morning’s manicure. I took her finger between mine and tried to sort of rub it off, afraid of pulling it and hurting her. I caught R’s eye across the carseat and motioned to her finger. He - father of two little ones - dexterously plucked the hangnail and the babe never noticed. We five continued on to have a lovely day.
